– DID YOU KNOW
… only about 10% of the fashion industry uses vegetable tanning to process the hides in a pure and natural way without using any harmful chemicals? This tanning process uses only organic substances from trees, plants and fruits.
It is a more complex, costlier and slower method of tanning which demands in-depth expertise and supervision of skilled craftsmen. Therefore, 90% of the fashion industry default to the more controversial tanning method, chrome-tanning.
Due to the use of chromium salts, which subsequently is dumped into the local environment, this method is very detrimental to the environment, animals and particularly damaging to human health. The primary health impacts from chromium are damage to the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and immunological systems, as well as reproductive and developmental problems. Despite these significant disadvantages, chrome-tanning is so widespread, as it is a cheaper and quicker process, which can be automated and carried out within one day. Vegetable tanning takes up to 30 days.
– AW20 COLLECTION NEW SUSTAINABLE INITIATVIVES
Upcycling Range! – reusing discarded leathers and creating something new
Our brand new Rainbow range – consisting of the Rainbow sandal and Rainbow Velcro sandal from our SS20 Collection is our very first upcycling range! The rainbow stripes are mainly made up of left-over leather scraps from production taking us one step closer to reaching our continuous goal of minimizing waste where we can. We reuse the undesirable scraps and transform them into a beautiful tonal rainbow design. We have expanded our Rainbow Range to our adorable Chubby Shearling Winter Boot – where similar rainbow designs have been created to enhance the cute factor in the most environmentally friendly way possible!
We are introducing a new textile to our sneaker range in Bottle Green and Chocolate. This cool and durable material is made up of 50% Recycled Cotton, 40% Organic Cotton and 10% Virginal Cotton.
Our zippers are now environmentally friendly! All our zipper tape is made from recycled PET bottles, old fiber and other polyester remnants.
The TEX Membrane in all our TEX shoes and boots is 100% recyclable and is free from two chemicals; PTFE & PFC. PTFE is claimed to be a cause of birth defects. PFC has been proved to be associated with developmental delays in the fetus and child, including possible changes in growth, learning, behavior and decreased fertility.
Our wool lining on all our Winter Boots are 100% natural wool. The shearling cuff on our Shearling Winter Boots and Chubby Shearling Winter Boots are 100% natural shearling.
The leather welts on our Winter shoes and boots are made out of 100% vegetable-tanned leather.
All our insole linings are also 100% ecological and chrome-free.
– BECAUSE TRADITION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP MATTER At Petit Nord, we have made the
conscious decision to produce and source all our products and materials in Europe. We believe in supporting small family-run workshops, where craftsmanship, tradition, and passion for the trade is embedded deeply in the family’s roots. Our shoes are hand-made in three to four different small family-run workshops in Portugal.
Today our soles are made up of recycled TR. What is TR? TR means Thermoplastic Rubber and is a synthetic plastic material. In our case we only use recycled TR. We found that the properties of TR soles, in terms of flexibility, support and heat control are great, and in some cases perform better than natural rubber.
SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENT
The fashion- and shoe industry produces a lot of waste. Too much waste. The TR we are using is recycled and comes from rejected/leftover TR soles. We are remolding the rejected soles, that will otherwise go to waste.
We believe using recycled TR product is an important active sustainable choice, as the current surging demand for natural rubber is causing massive deforestation in order to make space for natural rubber plantations, decimating some of the worlds most endangered forests, putting wildlife and critical ecosystems at risk.
We have taken into consideration the experience of our Portuguese partner, who is head of our shoe production, a second-generation shoe maker. Together we have reached the following conclusions:
1. TR has the same performance qualities in terms of support and strength as rubber.
2. TR has better endurance, meaning less wear and tear, including better adaptation to changing weather. When the temperature is high, the natural rubber becomes flexible and even starts to melt.
